I’m all for grooming but sometimes, I’d rather spend my money on other things – like clothes, nice meals out and fun trips away. With that in mind, I’ve put together a few money saving beauty tips that will keep you and your purse looking good!
Hair
Save on shampoo, spend on conditioner
Shampoo simply cleans the hair so in my opinion, there is no need to splash out on anything too pricey. Cheaper brands like Pantene, Aussie and Herbal Essences do the job just as well as premium brands. I prefer to spend more on conditioner as it stays on your hair longer and absorbs more of the nutrients (that’s what I think anyway!).
Wait longer between trims
The general ‘rule’ is to have your hair cut every 4-6 weeks but in my opinion, you don’t need to unless your hair is very damaged or you have a short cut which requires more maintenance. I leave mine until about 12 weeks and it’s absolutely fine! I wouldn’t recommend leaving it longer than that though as it will start to look scruffy.
Leave your eyebrows alone
If the thought of unruly brows haunts you then I’d probably skip this tip. But if you aren’t too bothered, try growing them out and have them done every few months rather than weeks. You’ll lessen the chance of ruining them by over plucking/waxing and you’ll be able to achieve a nice shape when you eventually get them done because they’ve grown to their full potential.
Stop colouring your hair
Another one for the hardcores. Ditch the dye and you’ll save an absolute fortune. Plus, your hair will be in much better condition. I haven’t had my hair coloured since November 2013 and have saved myself hundreds. I know roots aren’t for everyone but if you don’t mind the dip dyed/ombré look, then why not leave your roots grow out?!
Make-up
Have separate products for work and weekends
Unless you work somewhere where your appearance is part of the job, I wouldn’t bother wearing expensive make-up to work as it will just run out quicker. I wear Rimmel, Revlon and Max Factor products to work and save premium brands for the weekend. I like having separate products for my ‘weekend face’ – it feels like more of a treat!
Nails
Do your own nails
I’d love to be the type of girl who gets her nails done religiously every couple of weeks but the truth is I begrudge paying for something that can be done easily at home. Get yourself some manicure essentials (file, buffer, cuticle oil, cuticle stick), do them yourself and save the salon for special occasions or when they could do with a professional touch.
Body
Don’t bother with scrubs
Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing much satisfying than dipping into a fresh tub of Soap and Glory body scrub, but if you exfoilate regularly like me, scrubs run out super fast. Get yourself a pair of exfoliating gloves and use with your favourite shower gel. It works just as well, if not better than scrubs and you won’t have those annoying grainy bits lying around in the shower to clean up afterwards.
