What’s your purpose? Why I want to help people this Christmas – and beyond

Everyone needs a purpose in life and mine is to help people in whatever way I can. 2020 has been a trying year for everyone and I think a little bit of kindness goes a long way.

Christmas is a weird time for me. I like the idea of it but I can never really enjoy because I get too upset thinking of those less fortunate – those who have lost loved ones, those who are lonely, those with mental health problems, those who are in unhappy relationships. I could go on and on.

Not all Yuletide joy

It’s not always “the most wonderful time of the year” for everyone and personally, I can’t sit back and turn a blind eye to those who are suffering. I know lots of people can just switch off and focus on their own enjoyment but that’s not me. I can’t bear the thought of it

So, I’ve been trying to think of ways I can help this year even though it’s limited with coronavirus restrictions. I’ve started making a big food hamper for the local homeless shelter and I’ve donated lots of boxes of chocolates to a local women’s refuge. I doubt I’ll be spending much on socialising so it’s money well spent!

Additionally, I’ve also donated money to a student hardship fund instead of taking part of a ‘Secret Santa’ at work – a lovely idea suggested by my colleague. I would happily do this every year as I have enough ‘stuff’ and don’t need more! I wonder if we could pick a charity every year and support?

I would have loved to have volunteered at the hospital over the festive period but as my parents are vulnerable and I still live at home, I can’t take the risk. However, if I lived on my own, I would! But then again, I’m asthmatic so I’m not sure whether that would be a good idea either.

Looking after others

Obviously, I’m going to be prioritising my family and friends too. Especially the ones who have struggled this year themselves and could do with some extra TLC. As long as I look after myself, I have enough energy to around and I’ve got a lot of love to give.

They’re all little things but I’m always trying to think how I can make someone’s day a bit brighter so if anyone has any further suggestions, I’m all ears. The way I see it, if you can do something small to make a person smile, then do it. Who wouldn’t want to make someone happy if they can?
