Thanks to social media, it’s easy to compare yourself to others. But we all know that many people use their platforms to highlight the positive parts of their life. And you know what, I get it. Why should people feel obliged to reveal the negative things happening to them? Some things should be kept private.
But equally, I understand people sharing the not-so-good parts of their lives, particularly if they’re influencers (as much as I hate that term!) or have some sort of brand or following. I think it’s important to be authentic in that kind of industry because you are literally ‘influencing’ others.
Compassion is key
However, the one thing I don’t understand is not being happy for people. Personally, I don’t get it at all. Why would you not want to see other people be happy? It doesn’t mean that you won’t ever feel the same way. It just might not be your time… yet. People are not doing it to spite you or make you feel bad. In fact, their happiness has got nothing to do with you.
Their joy is going to happen regardless, so you can either be bitter and ruin your own mental state or you can react positively and learn something. If anything, I get inspired from other people’s happiness or success. It motivates me to pursue what I want. If they can do something, what’s stopping you?!
Sharing the joy
Besides learning and being inspired from a happy person, you can also add to their happiness too. Showing support and enthusiasm for someone’s nice news is a surprisingly kind gesture. It can go a long way! If you practise showing your support continuously, you’ll get into the habit of being thrilled for people’s good fortunes. Speaking from experience, it’s a lovely feeling when you’re happy and someone is genuinely pleased for you too.
To sum up, being happy for other people can:
- Help you learn what would make you happy
- Make you realise that for all life’s cruelty, it’s also wonderful
- Inspire you and motivate you to go for what you want!
- Create positive habits such as showing kindness, selflessness and supporting others
So, lets start celebrating each others bliss!
